Dear Subscriber,
On Sunday 11 September there will be a general election in Sweden. At the time of writing, the race is incredibly close between the different alliances, and it still not 100% clear what coalition block would be able to form a stable government.
With a looming energy crisis in Europe, Sweden is having a number of challenges on their home turf as well, such as escalating gang crime rates and long queues to access health care services. Add the NATO application to that, and we can see that it is a lot at stake in this election. We hope that all Swedish citizens in Singapore have cast their votes to build a strong Swedish government for the coming four years.
For a quick guide in English to the election on Sunday, check out Euronews.

In July this year, Singtel announced that more than 95 per cent standalone 5G coverage across Singapore has been achieved, ahead of the regulatory target of end-2025. As the 5G network is being rolled out, new services and experiences for enterprises and consumers now need to follow. How do we optimise the 5G network to the benefit of the whole society?
Nordic companies play an important role in the digital transformation of Singapore and Southeast Asia. They are key partners in bringing 5G connectivity and innovative solutions to consumers and businesses and are committed to support the development of a digital future in the region. In this joint event, we will explore the Nordic vision for 5G as Singapore is gearing up to become a global front-runner for innovation in 5G applications and services.
Chuen Hong Lew, CEO of IMDA, will give the key note and representatives from Ericsson, Telenor, Nokia, Singtel, and Aalto Executive Education Academy will share thoughts on 5G from a multi-dimensional perspective with a specific focus on technology, people, industry, sustainability, and skills. Our four Nordic Ambassadors will also join us for this event.

REPEAT: Female Mentorship Program |
|
|
|
We are looking for a new cohort of mentees for our 2nd edition of our successful Female Mentorship Program, which will launch in November!
Does your company have great female leaders who you would like to see move on to more senior positions? Support their career journey by nominating them for SwedCham's Female Mentorship Program.
SwedCham’s vision for the mentorship program: - Create a solid cross-industry network and a professional sounding board for female rising stars in SwedCham’s business community
- Raise the bar for female leadership development in Singapore
- Promote Swedish leadership values and strengthen ties between Swedish companies in Singapore.
Who can participate? - Mentees: The program is aimed at up-and-coming female leaders in middle management positions at SwedCham member companies. The mentees should already have a clear leadership position - either leading a business unit or a team of people.
- Mentors: Senior female & male business leaders (C-suite level or equivalent), preferably with experience in developing female leaders.
Program set-up The mentorship program will run over 6 months in groups of four: One mentor and three mentees. The group will meet face-to-face once a month, during working hours, for a 2-hour session. SwedCham will be in charge of setting up the groups. The cross-industry set-up provides a safe and neutral space where everyone can feel free to share and discuss openly.
Some inspiration from last year's program can be found here and here. Would you like to know more? Contact Lisa Ferraton at lisa.ferraton@swedcham.sg.
NB: For SwedCham's Corporate Members only.

Zoe Cheng, Scania, was part of Cohort 1 of SwedCham's Female Mentorship Program. Read her story here:
Zoe Cheng - congratulations to your new role as Regional Manager SEA for Scania! How has your first months on the job been? In general, very good. I am lucky to have an MD who has given me her full support on my continued leadership journey. She has been guiding me along which made me feel secure in my position from the start. Our previous Regional Manager continues to support me too, even though he is no longer in the region.
In your previous position as a Service Manager, you joined SwedCham's Female mentorship Program last year. Why did you join? I was nominated to join by my previous boss Anders Liss, as he thought it would be good for me to develop my skill set in leadership and management and that it could benefit my career journey.
How did you experience this female-focused cross-industry leadership development program? It was an excellent program where I learnt a lot. I met many professional women from different industries and backgrounds with similar experiences as me. The fact that it was set up cross-industry meant that I could discuss and share challenges openly with them. Everyone was so supportive of each other. We could discuss what professional paths we were on and what different strategies that would be most effective to develop further. We wouldn’t have achieved anything without the guidance of our mentor Jerrica Chooi. She has a successful career but still goes out of her way to help the team by sharing her experiences and helping us with our challenges.
You have had a big year this year, as you decided to apply for the role as Regional Manager for Scania, and succeeded in getting the position. Tell us a little bit about your thought process here. Were you confident from the start that you wanted to go for this role as it became available? From the start of the mentorship program, Jerrica had talked a lot about how women often felt worried about taking on a bigger role. Women tend to want to be 100% sure they have all the capabilities needed before applying for new roles. She encouraged us not to miss opportunities even though you might have questions about your own competence. As this opportunity came up at Scania, I shared in my mentor group that I was interested in applying. All my team mates encouraged me to go for it. I felt really empowered by these encouragements. I discussed with them and I got a lot of helpful advice from Jerrica. Throughout the application process, I got a lot of support from my mentorship group.
You have worked for Scania since 2014, in Hong Kong and Singapore. Why is Scania a good employer? Scania has given me a lot of opportunities to develop not only as a professional but also as a person. I have always felt that Scania cares about its workforce and that the company works hard to ensure its employees develop in their careers.
What is your vision for Scania in Southeast Asia for the coming 3-5 years? That we will continue to be the leading brand not only in SEA but in the world and that we lead the way in sustainable transport.
And the final remark will come from Jerrica Chooi, Head of ABB Singapore and Zoe's mentor: Zoe was definitely ready for this role - she just needed some strong female voices to remind her that the job should be hers, and it was all hers for the taking. Women supporting women! |
