How can we empower the next generation of women engineers – and prepare our leaders to lead them? We tried a new approach by flipping the script with reverse mentorship, asking a female or non-binary student from Chalmers University of Technology to mentor a senior leader. “What could I, a young engineering student, contribute with? I quickly realized that I do have valuable insights to share, and my perspective matters. It can even make a difference. Meeting with my mentor has made me hopeful about the future. Change is possible,” says participating mentor Moa Lennström. “I had many eye-opening moments during our meetings, such as understanding how Volvo is perceived among young, female students. I also realized that the dynamics in a room of only women change when a man enters. This experience has made me humble and provided me with invaluable learnings for my future leadership,” says Mike Hatrick, mentee and senior leader at Volvo Group. Thanks to all the mentors and mentees who participated and demonstrated that leadership growth is a continuous, two-way street.
