Swedish Chamber of Commerce in Singapore’s Post

Last week, SwedCham's People & Culture committee kicked off the 3rd edition of its Female Mentorship Program, which will run over the coming 6 months, with Agneta Olsson and Sandra Appelqvist in the lead. Some years back, SwedCham's #HR community initiated a crucial dialogue on fortifying #femaleleadership in #Southeastasia. Despite being a priority for years within many organizations, progress has been slow. Female representation in top leadership roles in most Swedish companies based in Singapore remains modest, and the pace of change is gradual. In response, we established a mentorship program, now on its third year running, aiming to bolster emerging female leaders in a cross-industry context.  SwedCham’s vision for the mentorship program: 1. Create a solid cross-industry network and a professional sounding board for female rising stars in SwedCham’s business community 2. Raise the bar for #femaleleadershipdevelopment in Singapore 3. Promote Swedish leadership values and strengthen ties between Swedish companies in Singapore. This year, we have participants from the following member companies: Alfa Laval Envac Electrolux Professional Group Ericsson Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence IKEA Mentor Media Supply Chain Solutions, member of Elanders Group SKF Group Tetra Pak Volvo Group. Eight leaders from the Swedish business community convened last week for an informal dialogue with the Chairman of Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), Mr Cheong Boon Png. The discussion centered on navigating business landscapes in Singapore and Southeast Asia, with participants exchanging insights on operations, regional trends and emerging opportunities. Hi Sofie Bager, new SwedCham President - here comes six quick questions to you to help our business community get to know you. 🎤 What do you do for a living and for how long have you done this?  📣 Since 2021, I work as Managing Director for GAC Singapore which belongs to the multinational logistics and maritime service provider GAC Group. I oversee all aspects of the organisation: Our business areas (ship agency and logistics), finance, HR, IT support, QHSSE as well as our commercial and operational strategy. 🎤 Is it important to have international chambers in Singapore? Why?  📣 The international chambers act as a platform for our members to build a professional network in Singapore. Many of the chambers engage in cross-chamber events which gives our members an even bigger opportunity to strengthen their network. The chambers provide their members with relevant topics both for Singapore and the wider APAC region. Last year when rents in Singapore were at its peak, various European chambers conducted a survey together where they asked about member concerns over rising cost of residential/office spaces, to serve as a critical resource for policymakers and researchers seeking to understand the challenges faced by business communities in Singapore. 🎤 As new SwedCham President, what's your top priority for the coming year?  📣 SwedCham had the uniqueness of attracting interest from the wider public in Singapore. This is where we can really make an impact on society and provide our members with a value-add beyond networking. This year we have some interesting projects coming up and I would like to see how we can achieve this success again. I would also like to continue to engage our members and attract more of our member companies’ employees to join our activities. 🎤 Can you share a memorable moment from your time at SwedCham that truly encapsulates the spirit of the organization?  📣 There have been a few moments, but if I must choose one it would be last year when we had the open house for The Green Innovation Centre, Cosy Garden. This is our project in Bukit Batok where SwedCham and 13 of our member companies together with Batok Grassroots Organisations and South West CDC formed a unique partnership to create a sustainable garden. During the event our SwedCham members were invited and at the same time the residents of the community were also out socialising - kids, parents and grandparents. It was incredible to see how we all interacted in this space, so many nationalities coming together in a very local Singaporean setting. For SwedCham to be part of this local community is something very special to me. 🎤 Describe yourself in five adjectives.  📣 Compassionate. Honest. Determined. Hard-working. Assertive. 🎤 If we don't find you at SwedCham or at GAC, where will we find you? 📣 Soon you will find me in a playground as I’m expecting a baby girl 😊 Otherwise, I like to be out walking.
