Event Details

For a company, protecting and managing its Intellectual Property (IP)* is critical as it can mean the difference between success and failure. Having a reasonable understanding of intellectual property will help businesses to incorporate these assets into their planning and strategy.

In this session, Ms Jennifer Brant, Lawyer and Public Policy Consultant, will help us understand issues of relevance for small and large innovators, across sectors and countries. She will explain what IP rights are and why it is important to use IP rights, especially for smaller companies. Furthermore, she will talk about the need for functioning IP systems across markets and explain the ways to leverage IP and take action.

Ms Brant has in recent years worked to raise awareness about the gender IP gap, that is, the lower use of patents and other IP tools by female innovators and entrepreneurs. She will explain the importance of inclusive innovation ecosystems by highlighting the following questions & actions:

  • What is the IP diversity gap?
  • Why, all things equal, are women entrepreneurs less likely to use IP rights?
  • What can be done about this?
  • Spotlight on solutions, including government programs, IP mentoring programs, policy advocacy work.
